The Metropolitan Colliery at Helensburgh produces coking coal (metallurgical coal) for Australian and export steelmakers, operated by Peabody Energy.

What is coking coal?

Coking coal is a relatively soft, low-ash, low-sulphur bituminous coal used to make coke — not the soft drink, but a dry carbon residue produced by baking coal at around 1,000°C in an oven without oxygen. The volatile compounds are driven off, leaving fixed carbon and ash fused together.

Metallurgical coke is essential in blast furnaces for smelting iron ore into steel. The strength of the steel depends on low-volatile coke free of sulphur and phosphorus contamination.

How it is mined and transported

Helensburgh's coal is extracted by longwall mining deep underground, then conveyed to surface facilities. Most coal is railed to Port Kembla for shipping. A smaller amount has historically been trucked to nearby coke works at Coalcliff and Corrimal.

Environment

Coal mining can affect land, waterways and groundwater — particularly sensitive given the mine operates beneath the Woronora Dam catchment and near the Royal National Park. Peabody publishes environmental monitoring and rehabilitation data on its Metropolitan Mine page.

Community concerns about subsidence, water quality and a 2022 coal sludge incident near the Royal National Park remain subjects of active community and regulatory attention.
