Bald Hill at Stanwell Park is one of the Illawarra’s best-known lookouts — a short drive east from Helensburgh (~15–20 minutes) on Lawrence Hargrave Drive. On a clear day you can see Stanwell Park beach, the escarpment, and the coast south toward the Sea Cliff Bridge and beyond.
It is also one of Australia’s premier hang-gliding and paragliding launch sites. Pilots have been flying from here for decades, and visitors often stop to watch gliders launch from the hill above the Pacific.

Getting there from Helensburgh
From Helensburgh town centre, head east down the escarpment to Lawrence Hargrave Drive, then continue south to the Bald Hill lookouts above Stanwell Park. The road is winding and popular with sightseers — take care on weekends and watch for parked cars, pedestrians, and gliders.
At the lookout
Bald Hill Reserve is managed by Wollongong City Council. The site was renewed between 2013 and 2016 with a viewing deck, paths, seating, toilets, and a hilltop café building. Parking is free in the main car park, with dedicated coach and bus bays for tour groups.
Food and drink
- Flying High Café — a small takeaway kiosk in the car park serving coffee, burgers, fish and chips, and other snacks. Destination Wollongong lists it on site; check the café’s website or Instagram for current hours.
- Ice cream van — a car-park ice-cream van has been a Bald Hill fixture for decades (long operated by the same family behind Flying High Café). Former local MP Rex Jackson also ran a van here in later years. It is especially busy on weekends when sightseers, motorcyclists, and day-trippers converge on the hill.
Sundays are the busiest day — car clubs and motorcycle groups often meet here, and the car park can fill quickly on fine weekends. Mid-week visits are quieter if you want the view without the crowds.

- Picnic tables and seating — tables and benches along the lookout for snacks, coffee, or a packed lunch
- Lawrence Hargrave memorial — sandstone cairn with bronze plaque near the car park, overlooking the beach where Hargrave made his 1894 box-kite flight
- Hang-glider sculpture — public artwork depicting a glider above the escarpment
- Whale watching — humpbacks migrate along the coast from roughly May to November; dolphins are sometimes spotted year-round
Walks nearby
- Great Southern Walk — a one-kilometre stepped track from Bald Hill down to Stanwell Park beach, linking the Royal National Park to the Illawarra escarpment (Destination Wollongong)
- Stony Batter — a short bush track north from the lookout into the Royal National Park, with coastal views toward the park’s white cliffs
Each November, the Stanwell Park Festival of Flight commemorates Lawrence Hargrave’s aviation experiments on the beach below.
